A Merlot dominated blend, sweet and supple, with a well-balanced tannic structure, this is a good honest claret-lover’s claret overseen by Christian Moueix (Ch Petrus) himself.

3 CHATEAU MAZERIS, Canon Fronsac, Bordeaux 2001 £22.90

Merlot predominates in this
deep-coloured, stone fruit scented wine.
Fresh, vibrant and juicy this Canon-Fronsac reveals delightful clarity of flavour and harmony. Opulent and fresh this is an excellent example from a frequently underestimated appellation.

5 CHATEAU DE LAMARQUE, Cru Bourgeois Haut Medoc 1998 £27.00

Cru Bourgeois from the southern Medoc. This chateau, from a good vintage, has made a wine of broad shouldered structure with complex, aromatic fruit. Cabernet based.

9 CHATEAU DE SOURS ROSE AC Bordeaux 2006 £17.90

Made by Scotsman Esme Johnstone this Rose continues to take the wine world by storm. The wine is 95% Merlot and has an extraordinary intensity of fruit with the colour incredibly vibrant, almost decadently pink and the nose and palate concentrated and profoundly aromatic.

Red Burgundy

12 COTES DE BEAUNE VILLAGES (Olivier Leflaive) 2004 £25.00

This has an earthy creamy nose, good mineral character and dark bitter cherries to the fore, set off by a heady dash of spice. The palate is full, ripe and generous with a robust, more austere structure in contrast and hints of treacle and dried fruit.

13 SANTENAY (Chanson Pere et Fils) 2001 £24.50

Situated in the southern end  of Cote de Beaune, the geology of Santenay has a strong influence on the wines produced. Heavier fruit and good ageing potential

15 MERCUREY, Les Montots (Aubert de Villaine) 2005 £30.00

From the owner of the world famous Domaine de la Romanee Conti, this wine typifies how southern red Burgundies should be made. Rich concentrated fruit, but with subtlety and finesse balancing the power of the wine. Terrific
effort.

17 MACON SOLUTRE MOULIN DU PONT, Auvigue 2005 £17.00

Wonderful, lemon butter fruit, proving that seriously good wine can come out of Macon. This is really quite a unique style of white Burgundy and is well worth trying.

19 BOURGOGNE BLANC LES SETILLES (Olivier Leflaive) 2006 £22.00

The use of oak here is very clever and produces a wine whose aromas and palate belie its youth and price. Delicious crisp fruit, fabulous structure and length.

20, 21 CHABLIS (Domaine Servin) 2005 £25.00, £13.00 half

One of the best makers of generic Chablis, Domaine Servin has all the steely, green flavours that one expects from a good Chablis, but with an extra richness to the fruit.

22 VIRE CLESSE (Chanson Pere et Fils) 2005 £24.50

Apple fresh yet rich on the nose with a weighty palate of ripe fruit, balanced with a lively soft acid.

23 CHABLIS 1er Cru Fourchaumes (Lamblin) 2005 £34.20

This is a rich but restrained first growth Chablis, traditionally made, with no wood whatsoever. Intense and elegant, it is quite delicious with shellfish, fish and white meats.

24 CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET, Les Blanchots (Olivier Leflaive) 2004 £45.20

From the superb stable of Olivier Leflaive. This fine vintage is now beginning to show well with a great purity of fruit on the nose, which is racy, elegant and ripe while the palate shows a fat charming richness and excellent acidity with a seductively ripe finish – one of the best!

Lychee and cinnamon fruit with an amazing concentration on the nose and palate. The intense flavours of Gewurztraminer stand up very well to flavoursome food. Vinified dry!

A truly outspoken wine, deep in colour, flamboyantly spicy, citrus and floral on the nose. Fractionally more restrained on the palate but still bursting at the seams with rich ripe mellow fruit.

A richly concentrated brew. With its complex marriage of concentrated Carinena, Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon, producing power, complexity and elegance.

This is a very modern, freshly fruited example with vibrant cherry fruit, plums and hints of vanilla – an excellent value, easy drinking Chianti.

46 CAMPOSILIO, Vino Da Tavola Di Toscana 1999 £29.50

Classic ‘Super Tuscan’ – black cherry fruit, overlaid with vanillin on the nose, whilst the palate is typical Sangiovese, rich and toasty, with the Cabernet providing smooth, ripe tannins to a long finish. A superb wine.

These two grape varieties are perfectly complementary in this setting offering fresh citrus zest allied to ripe, leesy, rich almost exotic fruit. Delicious with fresh fish.

53 ZILZIE ESTATE VIOGNIER, Victoria 2003 £19.75

Pronounced exotic perfume with peaches-and-cream viscosity and caramel hints in the mouth. Multi-layered and luscious, with a lingering dry finish.

54, 55 GATEKEEPER CHARDONNAY (Simon Hackett) 2005 £17.50, £9.70 half

55 French oak barrels are used for maturation of this wine and an added complexity of flavour results. Balance of fruit and oak is very carefully controlled.

Australia, red

50 CRANSWICK SMITH SHIRAZ MERLOT BIN 19, South East Australia 2006 £16.00

The two varieties here are vinified separately, Merlot in old oak casks and Shiraz in stainless steel to preserve freshness. The resulting wine shows bright peppery ripe fruit complimented by a heavy dash of spice with added definition through traces of well integrated oak.

Delicious, appetizing red. Vibrant blackberry fruit with hints of pepper and old vine character.

This wine has a classic nose, perfumed and floral with mild petrol notes and delicate spice. The Palate is full and rich, balanced and controlled throughout - a lovely wine – delicious with spiced food too.

is a delicious, rich, leafy-fresh Sauvignon with vegetal overtones, reminiscent
of
asparagus.

63 MUDDY WATER CHARDONNAY, Waipara Valley 2003 £26.50

Beautifully balanced, full-bodied and richly textured, it exudes ripe fruit, both tropical and citrus and a finely tuned minerality. Oak plays only a subordinate role in this wine.

64 CLOUDY BAY SAUVIGNON BLANC, Marlborough 2005 £35.00

Pale straw green in colour and piercingly aromatic, this wine shows all the characteristics of an excellent Marlborough season. An evocative fusion of fully ripened tropical fruits and freshly cut herbs layered over a base of fresh lime.
